The Chevrolet Camaro Legends Tour visits the NEOCC Camaro Fall Classic, September 1999.

2nd Gen Camaro Owners Group

My involvement with the NEOCC
While my '80 Z was in pieces in the garage, I happened to notice an ad in the local newspaper... something about a Camaro Club.  I thought at the time, this might be something my son and I could do together.  As it turned out, he was busy the night of the meeting, so I went alone, just to check
it out.  It turned out to be an organizational meeting to form a new Camaro club (under the guidelines of the United States Camaro Club).  I was interested.  I have always been good at organizing stuff, and I was in the market for a new hobby anyway.
gmz28camaros
A few more months pass.  A core group returned to the first official meeting of the NorthEastern Ohio Camaro Club.  May 1994 - we are organized as a local chapter of the U.S.C.C., officers are elected and dues are paid.  Actually, four people decided to join up that evening and pay their dues.  Those four charter members were also our first Club officers.  Of course, I was one of those four, and the first Club Secretary.  I also took on the task of putting together some kind of newsletter.  We had big plans for what started off very small!
The Club began to grow immediately.  By the end of 1994, we were up to 38 members.  Some members have signed up and stayed with the Club; some members sign up for a year and disappear.  But the NEOCC has steadily grown to be a major force in the Camaro community.  Today, we have over 250 members (that own and enjoy over 300 Camaros).
I have remained active in the Club.  As the Club began to grow, and my duties increased and became more time-consuming, it became necessary to split up my responsibilities.  The Secretary position was divided up into Recording Secretary, Membership Secretary, Activitiy Coordinator, and Club Historian.  I have remained as the Membership Secretary, and I am still Editor of the newsletter, the NEOCC NEWS, now with a circulation of well over 300 copies per month.  A few years ago, I also passed the duty of ordering and taking care of Club apparel on to another member.  But don't worry, I still have enough responsibilities to keep me busy!

                                 THE FALL CLASSIC
Right from the beginning, we had plans to hold our own Camaro show.  Because the Summer is so busy, we decided to hold our show in the Fall; in fact, our first show was held in October 1994 - the 1st Annual All-Camaro Fall Classic Car Show.  Changes and improvements were made with each successive show, not the least was shortening the name.  The present show is now generally known as the NEOCC Fall Classic.  That first show in '94 had 5 classes and attracted 38 participants.  As participation and attendance increased yearly, new classes and activities were introduced.  The original 5
1st All-Camaro Fall Classic Car Show Oct. 1994
classes in 1994 expanded to 9 (1995) , 17 ('96), 21 ('98), 23 ('99), 28 (2000), 32 ('01), 37 ('02), and 40 ('04).
After several years of searching, we finally found a show site that was suitable for our needs - the campus of the North East Ohio Universities College of Medicine (NEOUCOM) in Rootstown, Ohio.  The show was held at NEOUCOM in 1997- '01. Unfortunately, a change of plans at the college did not allow us to continue after 2001.  In 2002, the show was held at the National Packard Museum in Warren, OH.  From 2003 onward, the show was held at Summit Racing Headquarters in Tallmadge (just east of Akron), our new permanent site for the Fall Classic.
In 1997, the Fall Classic finally became a 2-day (independently) judged show, featuring three levels of competition for every year Camaro:  Stock, Street, or Modified, depending on the amount (or lack of) modifications; plus additonal classes for Pace Cars, ProStreet, Special Production, and Special Interest.  Best of Show was expanded to include separate trophies for the best Camaro in each of the three levels.  A display class was first offered in 1999 for those who wanted to participate and get a "feel" for what happens at a Camaro show, without the pressure of getting their cars judged.  Classes specifically designed for trailered show cars were introduced in 2001.  Also, awards are presented for Club Participation and for the Camaro (and owner) which traveled the Longest Distance to attend.  Other features of the show are drive-through judging; goody bags, door prizes and dash plaques for all participants; a live DJ; games and activities for the kids; on-site food and beverages; and "indoor facilities."  Each year, proceeds from the 50/50 drawing are donated to a local charity.
In 1998, Chevrolet became actively involved for the first time.  Scott Settlemire (then Assistant Brand Manager, Camaro) brought in a couple of brand new 1999 Camaros, hot off the assembly line, numbers 5 and 6 for 1999 - a Hugger Orange Z28 Coupe and a Bright Blue Metallic Z28 Convertible, and also drove in a 1998 Camaro B4C Chevrolet Police Special.  Since 1999, the Camaro Legends Tour , Chevrolet's traveling display of Camaros and information, has also been part of our event.  At the awards ceremony in 1999, Scott was made an honorary member of the NorthEastern Ohio Camaro Club.
Also in 1998, Brian Henderson and Joe Swezey from Super Car Workshops, Latrobe, PA brought out an Island Teal 1968 Yenko and a Rallye Green 1969 Yenko.  For the past several years, Brian has not only brought some fine examples of the Yenko cars,  but has also presented some informative seminars on the legendary Super Camaros.
The NorthEastern Ohio Camaro Club
Established in 1994, the NEOCC is a very active club.  Besides local cruise-ins and car shows, the NEOCC is represented at all of the big Camaro shows in this part of the country, where more often than not, members take home the Club Participation Award.  Other Club activities include monthly meetings, "test & tune" racing at local 1/4 mile drag strips, a Summer picnic, a Christmas party, and scheduled activities throughout the year, including the winter "off-season" months. Members are involved in all aspects of the hobby - cruising, showing, racing, restoration, and just hanging out with fellow enthusiasts.
The 13th Annual NEOCC Fall Classic is scheduled for
September 16-17, 2006 at Summit Racing
in Tallmadge, OH, just east of Akron.
Over the years, several local/regional Camaro clubs have been represented at the Fall Classic, so there is usually quite a contest to see who will take home the Club Participation Award.  Thanks to the following for their participation and support:
The NEOCC is centralized around the Akron/Cleveland/Youngstown area of northeastern Ohio, but has members from throughout the state.  The roster also show members from Michigan, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Georgia, Florida, Texas, Alabama, Arizona, and Ontario, Canada!  The current membership total is close to 300 members.

These were the featured Camaros at the 2001 Camaros @ Carlisle show, held in conjunction with the All-GM Nationals in Calisle, PA.  The 2002 35th Anniversary Camaro SS (pictured front and center) was officially unveiled to the public at this year's event.
Limited Edition 2002 35th Anniversary Camaro SS, dressed in graphics as a Brickyard 400 Pace Car.  Available in Convertible or T-top Coupe version, all models feature Red exterior, special graphics/stripes and badges, and two-tone leather interior.
I guess it had to happen sooner or later...but where's the Confederate flag on the roof?  If you're a fan of the Duke boys....
While it's a beautiful car...something's not quite right!  It's a '93 Indy Pace Car, right?  Wait a minute...they didn't make a Camaro SS in '93...and the 4th gen Convertible didn't come out until 1994, and they definitely didn't make any '93 Indy Pace Car convertibles!!  A very nice rendition of what shoulda/coulda been!
